![]() ![]() Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This rare and beautiful book is bound to appeal to both the innocent young and the most sophisticated seniors. ![]() With Johnson and Fancher's atmospheric, large-scale paintings bursting off the pages, Dr. Here is a wonderful way for parents to talk with children about their feelings. Using a spectrum of vibrant colors and a menagerie of animals, this unique book does for the range of human moods and emotions what Oh, the Places You'll Go! does for the human life cycle. Seuss saw his original text about feelings and moods as part of the "first book ever to be based on beautiful illustrations and sensational color." The quest for an artist finally ended-after the manuscript languished for more than two decades-at the paint brushes of husband-and-wife team Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher whose stunning, expressive paintings reveal such striking images as a bright red horse kicking its heels, a cool and quiet green fish, a sad and lonely purple dinosaur, and an angrily howling black wolf. Seuss wrote in 1973, was a letter outlining his hopes of finding "a great color artist who will not be dominated by me." ![]() ![]() But in a world where humans call the shots, can the Kitten Construction Company prove their worth. There was room after room filled with extraordinary sculptures, ancient icons and immense tapestries, paintings to make angels weep and saints envious, quantities of gold and silver and gemstones beyond the ability of even man’s deepest avarice to comprehend. The public areas were above the thieves, buildings three and four stories high that held centuries of art and artifacts collected by rulers whose whim was the very breath of life for their subjects. ![]() Tides that should warm each neighbouring life They brought me rubies from the mine, And held them to the sun… Who gave me Faith’s music and told me about the “house wine” of the South. ![]() ![]() ![]() Uses for Boys by Erica Lorraine Scheidt Goodreads | Amazon This fast-paced, edgy novel about obsessive teen romance is prefect for fans of Ellen Hopkins. ![]() Books for Fans of Ellen Hopkinsīleed Like Me by Christa Desir Goodreads | Amazon While there are lots of other potential read-alikes for Ellen Hopkins, I wanted to give a broad range. I wanted a balance of novels in verse and problem/issue books, and some easier reads and some award winners. I’ve also had a couple of readers in the library ask the question, and while I had a few go-to recs, novels in verse and problem/issue novels are not my favorite, so I didn’t have a huge list of off-the-top-of-my-head recommendations. I recently snagged a copy of Ellen Hopkin’s Crank at the Friends of the Library book sale for him, and his students have loved it and are asking for more books like it. I’ve been helping Mister BS build a classroom library. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel way too real. I still don’t know if I did or not, even after reading it through twice. In fact, when I finished the first story, “Books and Roses,” I flipped right back to the beginning and started again, convinced I’d missed something. I’m not a big re-reader, but this collection seems ripe for revisiting. Oyeyemi will never let you get comfortable, but if you strap on your weight belt and bring the intensity, her brand of magical realism will slowly coalesce into something you can hold, loosely, if not fully grasp. ![]() In much the same way as a good, hard workout eventually leads to an endorphin-fueled breakthrough, Oyeyemi’s short stories eventually clarified for me, and what began as a veins-bulging effort relaxed into a steady rhythm that I could keep pace with. And then she'll blow her whistle in your face and cheerfully scream at you to get a move on. At some point, you’re going to find yourself splayed out on the mat, panting like an animal and protesting that it’s too hard, you can’t do one more set. ![]() Reading Helen Oyeyemi is like working out with a friendly but very aggressive personal trainer. ![]() |
